Briefly present the mechanisms of action of antineoplastic drugs

The antineoplastic drugs work by impairing mitosis, especially in fast dividing tumor cells. It does the same by triggering programmed cell death/ apoptosis in the actively dividing cells. Mitosis can be impaired by a number of ways:

  • Causing damage to DNA
  • Inhibition of cyclins which are involved in cell division.
  • Inhibition of the entire cellular machinery involved in cell division.
